Are you an avid boater, looking to work in the outdoors? Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) suits people who want to work in the maritime industry as a general purpose hand, better known as a deckhand. North Coast TAFE has been the leader in Maritime Training for more than 25 years delivering learning to more than 6,000 students across four different campuses. All teachers have years of maritime experience with most still working in the industry. State-of-the-art facilities, combined with fully-flexible delivery means students can study when they want, where they want, coupled with full support from knowledgeable and experienced teachers. Our Maritime section is fully accredited with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority for the delivery of maritime training. The maritime industry is very varied in nature: From eco-tourism, charter fishing, professional fishing, ferry operations, sightseeing tours and whale-watching, employment opportunities are worldwide. If you have a passion for the water, boating or fishing the maritime industry is for you.

At the request of the industry, there is a strong practical nature to all our fully-flexible maritime courses. You will gain skills in knot-tying, anchoring a vessel, fire-fighting, survival, workplace health and safety and basic lookout duties on-board vessels. On completion of this course you are eligible to receive you General Purpose Hand Certificate of Competency from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and to apply for positions on commercial vessels up to 80 metres anywhere in Australia out to the exclusive economic zone.
The course is taught via a combination of key note lectures, tutorial support, practical on-water sessions, helm room use and workplace delivery.  There is an optional face-to-face option in Port Macquarie, the Coffs Harbour Education Campus, Maclean and Ballina. Students will be assessed on assignments, written tests and practicals.
