About the course

Course Number: MAR20313-01V01

If you have an interest in the mechanics of boating vessels and a desire to work outdoors in the industry, our Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) will teach you the skills required to become a master and engineer on commercial vessels in Australia. North Coast TAFE has been the leader in Maritime Training for more than 25 years delivering learning to more than 6,000 students across four different campuses. All teachers have years of maritime experience with most still working in the industry. State-of-the-art facilities, combined with fully-flexible delivery means students can study when they want, where they want, coupled with full support from knowledgeable and experienced teachers. The Maritime section is fully accredited with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority for the delivery of maritime training. The maritime industry is very varied in nature: From eco-tourism, charter fishing, professional fishing, ferry operations, sightseeing tours and whale-watching, employment opportunities are worldwide. If you have a passion for the water, boating or fishing the maritime industry is for you.

At the request of the industry, there is a strong practical nature to all our fully-flexible maritime courses. You will gain knowledge and skills in handling a vessel, basic servicing of inboard motors, operating outboard motors, navigation, seamanship, survival and fire-fighting. With approved sea-time assessment, successful completion will enable you to obtain a Coxswains Certificate of Competency, which allows you to operate as master and engineer on commercial vessels up to 12 metres in length anywhere in Australia, out to 15 nautical miles.

Students are required to be 18-years-of-age or older. The course is taught via a combination of key note lectures, tutorial support, practical on-water sessions, helm room use and workplace delivery.  There is an optional face-to-face option in Port Macquarie, the Coffs Harbour Education Campus, Maclean and Ballina. Students will be assessed on assignments, written tests and practicals.

This qualification is suitable for an Australian traineeship pathway.
