Are you working in the commercial maritime industry, looking to up-skill in order to expand employment opportunities on commercial vessels? Our Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal) is the second level Masters Certificate which allows you to operate as master on commercial vessels up to 24 metres in length anywhere in Australia.

North Coast TAFE has been the leader in Maritime Training for more than 25 years delivering learning to more than 6,000 students across four different campuses. All teachers have years of maritime experience with most still working in the industry. State-of-the art facilities, combined with fully-flexible delivery means students can study when they want, where they want, coupled with full support from knowledgeable and experienced teachers. The Maritime section is fully accredited with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority for the delivery of maritime training. The maritime industry is very varied in nature: From eco-tourism, charter fishing, professional fishing, ferry operations, sightseeing tours and whale watching, employment opportunities are worldwide. If you have a passion for the water, boating or fishing the maritime industry is for you.

Developed in consultation with the industry, there is a strong practical nature to all the maritime courses. You will gain knowledge and skills in vessel-handling, navigation, seamanship, operating wheelhouse equipment, collision regulations, maintaining a navigational watch, survival and fire-fighting. With approved sea-time, successful completion enables students to obtain a Master up to 24 metres Certificate of Competency, after which you will be eligible to command a commercial vessel <24 m long in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or act as chief mate or deck watch-keeper on a vessel <35 metres long in the EEZ.

The course is taught via a combination of key note lectures, tutorial support, practical on-water sessions, helm room use and workplace delivery.  There is an optional face-to-face option in Port Macquarie, the Coffs Harbour Education Campus, Maclean and Ballina. Students will be assessed on assignments, written tests and practicals. Students are required to be 18-years-of-age or older and should contact TAFE regarding the sea-time requirements before enrolling in this course.

This qualification is suitable for an Australian traineeship pathway.
