This qualification is for people who want to have a career in design. It provides students with broad fundamental skills in design with an emphasis on exploration and experimentation of the design process. In the latter part of the course learners can explore aspects of specific design disciplines which can be extended upon with further study.You may select to study a pathway within this course that provides a "specialist" design outcome dependant on the electives studied. However, not all TAFE NSW colleges offer all electives. It is important that you contact colleges in advance for information on the pathways available.
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.Pathways into the qualificationIt is recommended that people entering this qualification either possess CUV30311 Certificate III in Design Fundamentals or possess some creative and design skills.
This qualification prepares people for learning at higher levels across a broad range of design disciplines. You can further your studies in design by applying for entry into Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in design for liveproduction, theatre and events; design and illustration skills; graphic design, interior design and decoration, product design, jewellery and object design, furniture design and/or visual merchandising. In particular, this qualification can lead to further study in the 10418 Diploma of Graphic Design (CUV50311) and the 10416 Diploma of Visual Arts (CUV50111).
There are limited job outcomes at this level, though in areas such as graphic
and digital design there may be some employment opportunities as a junior design
assistant, working in graphic and digital design sectors.
A TAFE NSW Certificate IV or Diploma could give you up 6 to 12 months advanced standing in a university degree and some Advanced Diplomas offer even more credit.
