Saddle Up for an Equine Career

The horse industry in Australia is best described as enormous!

In financial terms, the horse industry contributes to just under $8 billion to the GDP, and is the fourth largest industry in the nation.  We have approximately 1.2 million horses in Australia, and a thoroughbred breeding industry alone that produces more than 15,000 foals per year.  The equine industry spans across many sectors including:  western disciplines, Olympic disciplines, racing, harness racing, sporting, campdrafting, rodeo, polo, polocrosse, Pony Club, mounted games, endurance, trail, pleasure, breed societies, show horse.  In addition to these sectors it extends into many areas including:  health, welfare, WHS, nutrition, riding, breeding, training, instructing, retail, transport, business management, bloodstock, agistment, spelling, biosecurity, environmental sustainability.

Our facilities are a centre of excellence you can build a career on

We are fortunate at North Coast TAFE, Equine Online™ to have our own Equine Centre at the Taree TAFE campus. The facility is a working industry centre and used for practical training. The centre is available for those less experienced students or those who want some hands on training and student/teacher interaction.

The Equine Centre is part of the Taree TAFE farm which caters for the horses to be on pasture full-time if required. The farm is divided into numerous horse safe paddocks with each having its own paddock shelter.

Most importantly we have our own horses. Handling horses always has an element of risk, but minimising that risk by having our own horses is an important part of our program. Our horses are a huge asset, as they help to lessen the unpredictability factor, because we know them well. The horses are available for students to work with during practical training sessions.

The Equine Centre is part of the Taree TAFE campus which offers ALL general TAFE campus facilities such as access to the library, canteen, student support services, classrooms and the like.

Flexible study

Equine Online™ delivers training to people wishing to enter, or advance, in the horse industry. Distance, remoteness, other commitments are no barrier as Equine Online beams into the home/workplace via the trusty computer. Equine Online™ offers a unique approach to horse industry education. It focuses on the individual, and all programs are designed to suit the unique circumstances of each student.

For example, experienced students, or those in the workplace, don’t need to come to campus to learn or be assessed in the basics – we offer a range of assessment options that allow students to achieve the practical outcomes of the course without setting foot on campus!

Equine Online™ is supported by industry qualified, trained teachers who are available 5 days a week for advice and support.
