Aquaculture, or ‘fish farming’, is a great career option if you are interested in learning about rearing aquatic organisms, such as fish, oysters, crayfish, prawns, algae and even crocodiles, for commercial production or research purposes.
Aquaculture farmers raise fish and other aquatic species for human consumption, bait, population restocking, for aquariums or in the case of pearls, for jewellery.
Aquaculture technicians feed and monitor the stock and ensure healthy growing conditions by checking and managing the water quality (eg oxygen levels and water temperature). They harvest, grade & pack stock for sale. They also clean and maintain the tanks, ponds, cages or nets and other equipment used.
When you study one of our Aquaculture courses you’ll learn about the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments including the open seas or in estuaries, on land based farms with ponds or indoor tank systems.
When you study Seafood Handling you’ll gain the skills and qualifications you need to wholesale, retail or distribute seafood products.
There are good opportunities for graduates to find work in the seafood industry, at cage farms, cooperatives, or in research.
So, if you like being outdoors, enjoy physical work, and don’t mind working odd hours, then a course in Aquaculture and Seafood may be for you!
