Working with Aboriginal students and communities

Our belief is that education is the best way to create positive change in our community. Because of this we work closely with a whole range of people and organisations to ensure the courses offered at TAFE NSW are relevant and important to our local community.

1
Aboriginal communities and student support
  • At TAFE NSW our Aboriginal Learning Circle team work closely with local communities and organisations to develop specific courses for Aboriginal students in a range of fields.

  • Our support staff are available to advise you through choosing the best course, assisting with your enrolment and applications, as well helping you once you start at TAFE with any learning support you may need. Contact a Coordinator, Engagement and Personalised Pathways here.

2
ABSTUDY
  • ABSTUDY is an allowance and assistance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are studying full-time or part-time. If you think you are eligible for ABSTUDY contact our Aboriginal Liaison Officers to see if you qualify. It might also mean exemption from the TAFE NSW fee.

  • You need to be enrolled in a Centrelink approved course, so you can also check with them before you enrol in your selected course.

3
Scholarships
  • There are lots of scholarships you can apply for which might help you with part or all of your course fees and expenses. For more information and applications visit our Scholarships page.

  • Organisations like the Aboriginal Land Council offer scholarships specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, so it’s always worth applying.
