Awards celebrate passion, innovation and excellence of TAFE students

Eleven top achieving students from TAFE NSW North Coast Institute were recognised at the 2016 North Coast Institute Student of the Year Awards dinner, held in the Osprey Restaurant at Coffs Harbour Education Campus on Wednesday 4 May.

Engineering Apprentice Daniel Marks, from Wollongbar Campus, was the overall Student of the Year, because of his excellence in designing innovative engineering solutions and pursuing commercial opportunities. He was also the Apprentice of the Year and Manufacturing and Engineering Student of the Year.

Daniel acknowledged the support of his teacher, Peter Smith, in acquiring a wide range of engineering skills while completing his Certificate IV in Engineering.

Institute Director for North Coast Institute, Elizabeth McGregor, said that Daniel was chosen as the overall Student of the Year because he was the kind of graduate that employers and economies are seeking in 2016.

“He’s designing innovative engineering solutions that are meeting customer needs at a time when the nation is placing high value on science, technology, engineering and mathematics”Elizabeth McGregor, North Coast Institue Director

NSW TAFE Commission Board member, Professor Annabelle Duncan presented the award to Daniel Marks.

Leteah Mitchell, from Taree Campus, was the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year because of her considerable academic ability and her pro-active efforts as a mentor and role model to her Biripi community.
