Jack Ate the Beanstalk in State Finals

A second chance proved successful for musician and Diploma of Sound Production student Nicko Bird when his new band, Jack Ate the Beanstalk, won last week’s Battle of the Bands Competition at Grafton TAFE.

The group also consisting of Matt Tolland, Abe Camden and Ben Camden are now set to compete in Lismore tomorrow in the QLD State Finals, and are looking forward to performing.

“I competed once in a different band years ago, and this is my second time and we won so now we get to play at the State Finals. But for us, I guess we are confident, yeah. There’s no point not being confident right,” says Nicko.

“In Grafton we performed three songs and all of those are Jack Ate the Beanstalk originals we put together, but it’s not something that’s easy to classify. It’s just a unique sound for us and the judges really liked it.”

Grafton TAFE Student Association Officer Angela Boorman says the competition is very popular every year, and is always different.

“We had 8 bands in total compete this year, and the winners will now compete at the SCU Lismore Unibar on Thursday 3rd September as part of QLD State Band Comp Final,” says Ms Boorman.

“We always have very high quality entries, and a really fun day with so many different styles and genres. The variation of age, experience and influences with our TAFE students really shows in their music.”Angela Boorman, Grafton TAFE Student Association Officer

The winner of the State Final will receive a range of prizes including $500 cash from the Australian Association of Campus Activities, two BIG SOUND delegate registrations, and a one day recording package at Tall Poppy Studios in Brisbane.

“At the moment we’re not recording Jack Ate the Beanstalk but I have some experience recording and working on other personal projects,” shares Nicko.

“The recording studio prize would be great for us, and would give us a chance to put some stuff down. At the moment we’ve been really focused on some new songs and getting our sound right.”

You can attend the QLD State Band Competition Final this Thursday 3rd September at the Southern Cross University Unibar in Lismore. If you are interested in Music or Sound Production, courses are available through Grafton TAFE on (02) 6641 1600.
