Her impressive background in the hospitality industry started as an apprentice chef on Hayman Island, and now spans more than 20 years’ experience.
“After completing my apprenticeship I moved to Melbourne where I was drawn to the café scene, with its fast pace and more casual approach to eating,” says Rena.
Rena’s lifelong love of cooking and continual passion for this diverse and ever-evolving industry progressed into an ambition of one day owning her own business.
“I had become very confident in the capacity of head chef and running a profitable and efficient kitchen, though I felt my expertise was limited to this area,” says Rena.

“The skills I learnt at TAFE enabled me to negotiate my way through the processes involved in establishing a business, and then the general day-to-day running, including budgets, book work and the legal and moral obligations of employing staff,” says Rena.
Breakfast at Shandies
Business at Shandies Cafe is growing steadily and establishing a positive reputation amongst locals. Rena has exciting plans for the warmer months when she intends to introduce ‘Lite Bite’ nights on Friday and Saturday nights.
“These nights will allow family and friends to come together in a laid back environment to enjoy tasting plates featuring flavours from around the world” says Rena.
